Interesting question. Perhaps it is time to substitute a bullet for the tongue. One thing's for sure, you'll never shoot yourself in the foot by holding your tongue (or biting the bullet. Well, maybe if you bite REALLY hard, you could possibly cause the bullet to explode. But then you'd have a whole different set of concerns. Perhaps you should prepare a kit ahead of time.... Yes, that's it, an "Oh My God, I Shot Myself in the Mouth" kit.)
If you mean holding back your honest opinion about a situation, that's up to you. Let me ask you this: can you REALLY change a person if they don't want or--importantly--don't care--to change?
Yeah Trixie's answer is both wise and amusing - the perfect combination. Still, if you really 'bite the bullet' it may be that you will have to let your tongue out from between your teeth and that could indeed cause you to shoot yourself in the foot, or perhaps put your foot in your mouth;)
