Fair plans

I'm looking forward to going to the Medieval Fair in Norman tomorrow. My roomie and I are going to meet some of my OSU friends and some of his family there. I had a great time there last year. Last year, the walking just about did me in, but this year, I'm in better shape.

Still working on my 20 List for today. I "renew" the list each night before I go to bed. Helps me to have a schedule of what I'm going to do the next day. I do like structure, I do.

Oh, I finally got the February family newsletter mailed. Yeah, I'm running a bit behind. Hope to catch up in April. We'll see how that goes.

Anyway, it's a big day tomorrow so I'm out of here. Have a great night.

Movement

I have all these things that need to be done, but no energy to do them with. The 20 List is helping; I have to force myself sometimes to get started, but once I do, things start to flow. Got to keep moving. Movement is life.

I'm sure part of the problem is the low carb diet. My body has to adjust to it. And some of this is depression. And maybe a bit of laziness. And my blood sugar problems.

Frankly, I think my warranty has run out!

Talk to you tomorrow.

Writing about what I am writing about

I was hoping Floozy and Other Stories would show up on Amazon.com during February or March. No such luck. It's still a bit early, but it would have been nice if it had. I'd like to do promotion for it, and maybe get some more sales. The bank account is whining mightily. Soon I will be forced to start selling kidneys on the black market. Several of my neighbors have an extra, and I’m sure they wouldn’t mind contributing to my welfare. And if they do, it won’t matter since they will be lying unconscious in a bathtub filled with ice. Ha-ha. Just kidding. Sort of.

Floozy will be available on Amazon.com soon, though. Probably in March or April. Then I can start pestering reminding people of where they can buy that gem of comedy greatness.

Speaking of my writing — and I was and you should be listening carefully as you never know what incredible and life changing wisdom I might choose to impart — I should have another Measurements of Murder™ mystery out this year. Yes, Bernard and Lisa stumble upon some more bodies in Murder by the Mile. Frankly, I wouldn’t visit their town of Ryton for nothing in the world, and I certainly wouldn’t be Lisa’s or Bernard’s friend or relative. They’re dangerous people to be around. I wonder when the chief of police is going to realize that Ryton was a nice quiet town before those two psychos showed up.

I’m also working on Debt Free At Last! A Beginner’s Guide to Money Management and hope to have it finished this year, also. I had a co-author on that book who has now bowed out. He has other time commitments, and he discovered that writing actually takes time and effort. I’m constantly reminded of that fact myself. Gloria Steinem once said, “I do not like to write; I like to have written.” There’s a lot of truth in that.

Another truth — an ironic truth as it were — is when I had a job, I constantly complained about how it took away time for me to write, and now that I’m unemployed, all I can think about is getting another job. There’s just no pleasing me, I guess.

This is not to say I haven’t been writing; I just haven’t been writing as much as I thought I’d write. I find I spend as much time worrying about my creditors as I do banging on my keyboard. Funny how that worked out, isn’t it? If you listen closely, you can hear my crazed laughter even where you’re hiding at.

I also have been writing a play. I have no idea what it’s about. So far it’s just four characters talking, talking, talking about nothing much. It’s like a talk show, but not as annoying. It doesn’t even have a title yet, but I’m thinking about calling it The Best Play Ever Written. Catchy, don’t you think? If William Shakespeare had possessed my sense of marketing, who knows where he’d be today? Well, he’d still be dead, but you know what I mean.

Of course, I will eventually find a new job and/or rob a bank and be rolling in dough. (I mean I will have a lot of money. I won’t actually be rolling in bread dough. Not again.) Or I will live off of the government dole and buy me one of those “welfare Cadillacs” that I hear so many conservative talk show hosts complain about.

In the meantime, don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t eat excessive amounts of animal protein, drink lots of water, and stay fit. In other words, take care of your kidneys. You never know when one of them might be needed.

Busy afternoon

Busy afternoon. I've been working on my 20 List and getting a lot of items done. I also walked 35 laps at the fitness center. That's about 2.20 miles. And I filed and cleaned and generally was a blur. Good job!

The only thing I didn't make progress on is Murder by the Mile, dang it. This book is not going to defeat me. It's not. I'm going to fix its problems, and it's going to be published this summer. That's my goal, and I'm stickin' to it.

I've very worn out and need to go to bed. I'm out of here. Talk to you tomorrow!

Sunday tidbits

I was hoping Floozy and Other Stories would show up on Amazon.com last week. No such luck. It was still a bit early, but it would have been nice if it had. I'd like to do a bit of promotion for it, and maybe get some more sales. Any sales. The bank account is whining mightily. Soon I will be forced to start selling kidneys. Several of my neighbors have an extra, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind contributing to my welfare. And if they do, it won't matter since they will be lying unconscious in a bathtub filled with ice. Ha ha. Just kidding. Sort of.

Anyway, overall a good day. Church, housework, nap, a bit of TV. That was the whole day. Oh wait, I rediscovered Iris Dement on YouTube. Iris is folk/country with a twang that can peel paint off the walls at times, but her songs are beautiful and her voice is pure sweetness. Don't know her, of course, but she seems like she would be a good friend. If you have small town roots, her song "Our Town" can break your heart.

Overall, a decent day. Hope yours was good, too. Talk to you tomorrow.

Saturday in Duncan

Went with my roomie to Duncan today to watch his granddaughter play soccer. It was warm here, but was windy and cold there. I didn't dress for the weather, and I about made myself sick watching. But his grandchildren sure are fun. I always enjoy them.

After the game, we drove around and looked at Duncan's Main Street. We found a bookstore that I want to go to, but it was closed by the time we found it. Next time.

Our Duncan trip took most of the day so I didn't do much. I tried to write a bit after we got back that evening, but I was too tired to make much sense even to me.

Anyway, that was my day. I hope yours was good

Better

Did better today. Got more things done.

- Did three loads of laundry.
- Vacuumed house.
- Washed dishes.
- Added more things to the garage sale items.
- Filed some papers in their proper file.
- Worked on the new outline for Murder by the Mile.
- Lots of picking up and putting away and discarding.
- Looked into taking classes at the local vo-tech.
- Posted on my blog (now)
- Tweeted a few times.
- Dusted this and dusted that.

Anyway, it was a full day, and I'm exhausted. Going to close now. Hope you had a great day and have a wonderful tomorrow! Talk to you then.

Not quite

Not quite as productive today, but did get five items done on my 20 list. Felt bad all day. Stupid blood sugar isn't behaving as it should. No writing, and I should have. Well, tomorrow is another day. I'll be swinging at it when the sun rises again.

Going to bed now. Well, first I'll update my 20 list and then bed. Talk to you tomorrow. See ya then.

Productive

Today was a good day despite not getting any writing done. Instead on my 20 list, I completed 11 tasks! Very cool. Being productive helps my feelings. And it was a beautiful day outside. Sunshine, lovely sunshine. Spring is finally here.

It's very late, and I'm tired. But it's a good tired. Too many nights recently I've gone to bed only because it was night, and that's what you're supposed to do at night, and I dreaded it because I'd sleep badly and have terrible dreams. Tonight feels peaceful, though. Maybe the dreams will give me a break tonight. Surely there are more deserving people of nightmares.

Anyway, tomorrow I will resume writing on Murder by the Mile and my family newsletter. And also complete five items on my list, to which I added items to replace the ones completed.

I hope your day was good and productive. Talk to you tomorrow!

Sometimes

Sometimes I just don't know what to do. Perhaps I should blow something up. That always makes me feel better. Although the neighbors that are left complain. Whiners.

Got more writing done today. It was harder going. My new direction is best, but it's creating a lot of changes and needs a lot of new words. Oh well, that's why I get paid the big bucks ... Wait a minute ...

Otherwise, I wasn't very productive. I have, however, made a list of twenty things I need to get done. Tomorrow, I plan on getting at least five of them done. Wish me luck. Talk to you then.

Moany Monday

Ouch. I was exhausted and achy today. I think I'm trying to catch a cold. But I got some laundry done, some housework, paid some bills, and worked on Murder by the Mile. I warn you now that MBTM is going to be the major subject of discussion on here until it's published. With a few minor breaks for news on the worldwide launch of Floozy and Other Stories.

I'm having to dump about a fourth of MBTM book. Can't save the words. I went a wrong direction, and the destination is bad, bad, bad. I'm having to back up and go another way. The new way will be better. MBTM is a cozy, and that's what my readers expect. And what I'm happiest writing.

I hadn't realized how much my emotional state had influenced the book. I was depressed, angry, and despairing. As a result, my characters were depressed, angry, and despairing. They made all the wrong relationship choices. And the murder mystery got lost.

Well, there's no fix for it except to rewrite it, and that's what I'm doing. Gotta write. Gotta sell. Gotta make me a bit of money to give to the tax man.

And on that note of financial awareness, I'm going to call it a night. Talk to you tomorrow.

Exhausted Sunday

Wow. I was worn out from the RPG tryout. Exhausted. I could barely move today and nearly fell asleep during church. You'd think I'd nap, but I was unable to do so. I just sat in my recliner in a stupor most of the day.

However, I did watch a great movie. How to Train Your Dragon is one of the best films I've seen in a long while. I liked it better than Avatar. Yes, I know you probably didn't, but I did, so there.

I'm also cranky. Well, a good night's sleep, and I'll feel better tomorrow. Talk to you then.

Wild time

It's been a wild time at the RPG tryout so far. The players threw some surprises at me, but The World of Kiegarth has handled them well. The sourcebook is solid. Or is so far. I'm quite proud of it. I actually expected it to fall apart or to expose some critical error. I even warned the players we might need to make major adjustments, but none so far. And we're close enough to the end, I don't think there will be any.

Now I have to figure out if there's any commercial possibilities in the sourcebook -- I think there are -- and how to get it into the hands of the people who would use it -- I have no idea how to do that ... yet.

One other observation: I'm dog-dead tired. In my college days, I often stayed up two or three days in a row. Not any more. I want NEED my sleep.

We'll finish up tonight, and I'll sleep tomorrow. Hope you're getting plenty of rest. Talk to you then.

Game on!

We're in the middle of my RPG tryout and game now. Breaking for a few minutes. So far, so good. Players seem receptive. A few suggestions from them on how to improve The World of Kiegarth, but for the most part, they seem to like the concept and what I've done with it.

One brief observation before I go: I created a "throwaway" character in the world. I didn't think a "Zombie Lord" would give the players much trouble. Turns out they're a major foe because of their ability to repeatedly raise the dead into zombiehood. Major surprise to me because I thought several other foes were going to be the hard ones to defeat.

Got to get back in there. Hope no zombie lords are giving you trouble. Talk to you tomorrow.

RPG

My RPG sourcebook will get its first tryout this weekend. I'm a bit nervous about it. This is my first time to attempt to create a RPG world all my own. No borrowing from any other source. I hope the players like it.

And that's all I'm doing. Proofreading, copying, printing, planning, etc. I've shelved MBTM until Monday next week, and then it will be my top priority. Need to get MBTM finished, edited, and published.

It's late so I'm going to call it a night. Talk to you tomorrow.

Light a fuse

It's nearly time for bed, and I haven't posted here. My intention/resolution was to have at least one post per day. So far, that's been a struggle, although I've gone back and filled in the days. I wanted to stay caught up. I wanted to ... share. Heh heh.

Oh, well, truth is that not much goes on in my life these days. I write, do housework, make job contacts, run a few errands, watch some TV, sleep, eat, and exercise, and pretty much do that every day with minor variations.

Something's gonna give. I'm going to pop a cork, light a fuse, burn a bridge or two. Who knows? It's exciting to wonder what will happen and what I will do.

I'm not down. I'm not out. I'm still screaming and kicking and being wrong in all the right ways.

How you be doing?

New

Today I ate at a Greek restaurant for the first time. The food was good, and the decor and atmosphere pleasing. I enjoyed the experience.

Those who know me will probably gasp in shock. I'm well known for eating at only a handful of restaurants and always eating the same food when I'm there. But over the past couple of weeks, I've been attempting to change a few things in my life by trying new experiences. So far, so good.

I've been attempting to do a new thing every day. Doesn't have to be big. I can read a new book, watch a new TV show, do a new exercise, listen to a new song, etc. Just a new thing a day. So far, I've liked all my new things, but I'm sure I will eventually find some that I don't. That's okay. The purpose is to experience new sensations and events. I don't have to like them. I don't have to do them again. Just once.

I don't want to live my life regretting the things I didn't do.

What about you? Got some experiences you want to do? Go do them! Unless, of course, they're harmful to you or other people. Then don't.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Sunday shine

A good day today. Went to a birthday party for my roomie's 2-year-old grandson. Had a wonderful time playing with the grandkids and watching them eat cupcakes, play games, and generally be as wild and crazy as kids can be. Also saw a lot of people that I haven't seen for years. It was a good time. And hey, the lunch and refreshments were great, too!

Came home and watched NCIS episodes I had recorded. Wrote more on the RPG sourcebook. Outlined a new chapter for Murder by the Mile. Not as productive as I'd like, but I'm learning to rejoice in small victories. And to remind myself small victories lead to bigger victories.

Anyway, it's late. I'm tired. I hope you had a good day! Talk to you tomorrow.

Shaking

A good day. Even productive. My roomie and I went to garage sales. I found a couple of knickknacks. He bought a couple of things, too. Nothing major found, but it was fun to get out of the house. I think I spend too much time here.

In the afternoon, I wrote on the RPG sourcebook and Murder by the Mile. Nothing awesome on either of them, but at least the words didn't feel so wooden. I think the black dog is wandering off finally.

We ate at a local Mexican restaurant for a late lunch. I have a tendency -- okay, a habit -- of always ordering the same thing. Today I choose a new menu item. It was good. Not familiar, but hey, I've never eated bad Mexican food. And it was something new.

I've been trying to shake things up in my life. I've fallen into a rut. I stay in this house in the dark except when I have to make job contacts or have to run errands. That's not good for anyone. I'm attempting to break back out into the world. Reconnect with life. That's the plan, man.

Hope good things are shaking in your world. Talk to you tomorrow.

Castles

I keep checking each day to see if Floozy & Other Stories has shown up on Amazon.com. It's way too early -- probably won't for several more weeks -- but I check just in case it's there. After all, a few books surely show up sooner than the given schedule. Why can't one of them be Floozy?

Yes, I know that's an example of magical thinking. Hey, we all indulge in it. And sometimes magical thinking yields results ... as long as you put the work in.

"If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." - Henry David Thoreau

I've built my castles. Now I just need to build their foundations. How are you doing on that? Are you breaking ground for your new dream? I hope so. Talk to you tomorrow.

One step

Despite everything, today was better. I don't think it's our normal state to be down and depressed. The simple act of living, of getting up each day, of doing chores, and being productive in small ways lifts our spirits. Sometimes it's enough to win small victories and rejoice in them. The finish line, the goal, is waiting, but it can wait for today. There's that old saying: "A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step." Very true.

This particularly applies to writing. We don't write a whole book in one session. (Well, most people don't.) We write word by word, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, chapter by chapter, and eventually we have a book. The trick is to enjoy those small steps and to take comfort in moving -- however slowly -- toward the goal. Physical therapists like to say, "Movement is life." It really is.

I hope you're moving toward your goal today. Step by step, we'll get there. Talk to you tomorrow.

Wisdom

I mentioned a couple of days ago that I was reading This Year I Will ...: How to Finally Change a Habit, Keep a Resolution, or Make a Dream Come True by M.J. Ryan. Here's another quote that she quoted in the book.

"One thing is clear to me ... You can't do everything you'd like to do ... You must hold on to some things and let go of others. Learning to make that choice is one of the big lessons of this life." - REALLIVEPREACHER.COM

I find this so true. There is everything in the world, but enough time. Talk to you tomorrow.

Stalled

A little better than yesterday, but things are still tense. It's like walking through a minefield. And I'm supposed to be writing and being productive, but I'm stalled. My creativity has always been tied to my emotional state, and right now, my emotional state sucks swamp water.

Well, I can write dark and unhappy poetry, but I need to be writing a light and interesting mystery. I've got to get Murder by the Mile finished and in shape for publication. I have been able to work a bit on the RPG source book, but the writing seems flat and boring to me.

Got to shake this off and get moving again. Hope I can soon. Life doesn't wait for us. I can't expect it to do so. Talk to you tomorrow.

Horrible

Horrible day today. One of the worse I've experienced in a long, long, long time. Well, these days happen. Sometimes things just go wrong. All I can do is ride it out. I've thought long and hard about this, and there are no moves for me to make, no words to say. Things are what they are, and I will adapt -- or not -- accordingly. Sorry to be so cryptic, but in this case, it's necessary for the sake of everyone concerned.

Trust me when I say I'd like to yell and throw things and maybe blow a few things up. But ... that's not what I do. I endure. I take what I can. I vent when I can. I learn to live with what I have to.

But there are times -- like most of today -- that I think about chucking the whole thing and heading for the islands.

Anyway, talk to you tomorrow. Unless I'm on the way to the ocean and then I'll drop you a postcard.

The hour of lead

After great pain ...

By Emily Dickinson

After great pain a formal feeling comes--
The nerves sit ceremonious like tombs;
The stiff Heart questions--was it He that bore?
And yesterday--or centuries before?

The feet, mechanical, go round
A wooden way
Of ground, or air, or ought,
Regardless grown,
A quartz contentment, like a stone.

This is the hour of lead
Remembered if outlived,
As freezing persons recollect the snow--
First chill, then stupor, then the letting go.

***
That's how I feel today. Tomorrow will be better. Talk to you then.

Garage sale 2nd day

Cold today so fewer people came by our garage sale. We still sold some stuff so it was good, but I'm glad we had yesterday, otherwise it wouldn't have been worth the effort. Wish it had been warmer. More people would have meant more sales.

Something bad happened in the afternoon. I can't discuss it here, but it was terrible and really shook me up. Cast a pall over the rest of the day.

Exhausted now. Emotionally and physically. Time for bed, I think. Talk to you tomorrow.

Garage sale 1st day

Just finished with the first day of garage sale. I'm really pleased. Lots of people came by and bought lots of stuff. Still a lot of stuff to sell. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Very tired, though. Garage sales aren't for sissys.

Was surprised by what people bought. Things I thought wouldn't sell did. Things I thought would sell didn't. Go figure. Lots of people asked about VHS tapes and Western movies. Only had a few of either. Sold all the Westerns and most of the VHS tapes.

Anyway, made a bit of money today. Hope to make more tomorrow. Talk to you then.

Undying 1

When we vowed to live together
forever,
didn't you realize what that
meant?

Our love undying...

Drink from the ebony cup,
my love.
Taste the salty sweet
blood.

Our passion unending...

All others finally
die.
But we will go on
un-living.

For better or worse
for live or dead
for richer or poorer
lips glisten red

forever and ever...
